One of our top priorities is to help guide your child to become a more confident and efficient reader and writer. We are going to accomplish this by setting up the Daily 5.This program focusses on effective ways to read, comprehend reading, listen to others, and write effectively. There are 5 areas of focus: read to someone, read to self, listen to reading, work on writing and word work; eventually students will choose which areas they would like to work on each day depending on their specific needs and goals. I will post reading and writing strategies, information and assignments on this page.
Daily 5
Read to Self: The best way to become a better reader is to practise each day, with books you choose, on your just-right reading level. It soon becomes a habit. A students just-right book is a book they are interested in, a book they can comprehend and know most of the words. Palliser's Literacy Coach recommends grade three students should read at home between 25 and 45 minutes every day.
Read to Someone: This allows for more time to practise strategies, helping you work on fluency and expression, check for understanding, hear your own voice, and share in the learning community.
Work on Writing: Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is practise writing each day.
Listen to Reading: We hear good examples of food literature and fluent reading. We learn more words, thus expanding our vocabulary and becoming better readers.
Word Work: Correct spelling for more fluent writing, thus speeding up the ability to write and get thinking down on paper. This is an essential foundation for writers. Throughout the year, students will learn specific words every week; when these words are practised and put up on the wall students are expected to spell them correctly. Here is a list of ALL the words that will be put up in the wall if you want to practise them at home!
